Look at three things: who is doing the work, what their last 12 months of client results actually look like, and whether they are willing to put a number in writing. Operator-led, not sales-led

A red flag: the person in the pitch meeting will not be the person executing the work. At big agencies, you are sold by an account director and serviced by a junior team you never met. The ratio of senior-to-junior on your account matters more than the agency's logo wall.

What we do: the founder is on every account. Period. Not as window dressing, as the editor. He reviews the work, signs off on the strategy, and personally answers your Slack at 11pm when something is on fire.

What to ask any LA agency: "Who specifically will write my SEO content, run my paid campaigns, and respond to my Slack?" If the answer is vague, you have a sales agency, not an operating agency.

How to evaluate the work, not the pitch

Portfolios lie. Every agency curates the three projects that went well. The honest question is: how do their average projects go? Ask for the last three engagements that ended, including the ones the agency lost. The reason they ended tells you everything. Bad fit on industry? Fine. Lost results six months in? Different conversation.

Get specific metrics in writing before you sign. "We will grow your organic traffic" is a slogan. "We will deliver 50 SQLs per month from organic by month 9, and here is the topic plan that gets there" is a commitment. Operators write things down.

Honest disclaimer: any agency that guarantees a #1 Google ranking is lying. The algorithm is probabilistic and you do not control it. The only legitimate guarantees in this business are on inputs (deliverables, cadence, response times), not outputs.

Real case studies have three parts: what was broken, what was done, and what changed in the numbers. 2. First-party data is the only data that matters

Apple killed pixel-based attribution. iOS 14 killed Facebook's targeting. Chrome's third-party cookie deprecation killed retargeting at scale. The brands who win in 2026 are the ones with clean first-party data, server-side tracking, real CRM hygiene, and an email list they actually own. The brands who lose are the ones still optimizing toward "ROAS" inside Meta's reporting interface.

3. Integration is no longer optional

For 15 years, "best of breed" channel specialists were the smart bet. You hired an SEO shop, a paid shop, a content shop, and the in-house team stitched them together. That model is finished.
